The International Typographic Style

The event that jump-started the International Typographic Style history was the creation of Akzidenz Grotesk by Berthold Type Foundry in 1896, with the aim of creating an objective design style. Swiss Style has made its way around the world and continues to inspire artists and designers every day. Just ask Cyrus Highsmith who tried to spend a day without Helvetica in New York City, only to realize that it was nearly impossible.

Pasadena Showcase House of Design 2024: Step Inside the English Tudor Revival Manse

For example, a father of the style, Ernst Keller, argued that a design solution should always be respectful of its content. While Swiss Design has evolved to establish many of the methods and rules that are still relevant in design today, its origin goes way back. The International Typographic Style was a reaction to the Arts and Crafts movement in the UK, the German Jugendstil, and the French Art Nouveau. According to a statement from Swiss Air, the aircraft had already reached a speed slightly above the maximum for taxiing when the pilot decided to brake suddenly. The airline said the timely action ensured that a potential disaster was averted. "Bomiso, an innovative alternative healing centre located in the heart of Berlin, harmoniously merges design with emotional resonance.

Charles and Ray Eames: Objects and Furniture Design

Sir Terence Conran has had more impact than any other designer of his generation on everyday life in Britain. Detail of DCW Side Chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1946, Design Museum. The primary influential works of Swiss Designers were typically posters, which were seen at the time as the most effective means of communication. Swiss Design got its start in post World War II Switzerland, though historians prefer the name International Style of Design. It was hardly limited to Switzerland and even found some of it’s greatest success in the development of logos and visual branding for U.S. corporations.

The idea of a modular grid arose at the beginning of the 20th century and was adjusted within the framework of the International Typographic Style in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1918, Ernst Keller began teaching at the School of Applied Arts in Zürich (the school itself was founded in 1878).[21] Keller developed a course in graphic design and typography. In his works, Keller used simple geometric shapes, intense colors, based on fundamentally simple graphic solutions.

The Influence of Swiss Design on Modern Typography

international swiss design

All of these movements including the International Typographic styles are defined by reductionist purity as a visually compelling strategy of conveying messages through geometric and color based hierarchies. The movement laid out a very important foundation for the basics of design and minimalism. The Swiss Style was pervasive—it had a great impact across multiple design disciples, influencing art, architecture, and culture. Above all, the ethos was focused on objectivity and eliminating any sort of style for style's sake. The Swiss Style embraces clarity, precision, and stripped-down design that doesn't confuse. Swiss designers were big on using the grid as a starting point, but they also challenged themselves to create designs that were balanced yet asymmetrical.

Ten interior design projects by Florence Institute of Design International

Their work is like the DNA of what we see in modern graphics and typography. They’re crucibles where design met educational reforms—molding minds to shape form with function. In a nutshell, Swiss Design was a movement that took hold in the 1950s in two Swiss art schools, the kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, led by Josef Müller-Brockmann, and the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule in Basel, led by Armin Hofmann. Both of these instructors had studied with the great Ernst Keller in Zurich before World War II.

Conceived within a cabinet of wonders that plays with the perception of space, this exhibition showcases a diverse collection of objects alluding to such emotions that lay the foundation for many art and design projects undertaken. The work has been created by Bachelor and Master students who address questions of technology, culture, and sustainability, with the installation inviting visitors to engage in thought-provoking narratives. An outdoor seating solution designed for the terrace of Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne, the Vidy Chair is composed of a canvas seat and a tubular galvanized steel frame. The terrace, which overlooks Lake Léman and the Alps, is a place where one can sit and absorb the breathtaking vista, all from the comfort of the Vidy Chair.

Swiss style and its prototypes

Sanicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern. The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting. The Potter Daniels Manor, the English Tudor Revival–style residence that hosted the 1975 and 1996 showcase houses, has been reimagined with 30 new interior and exterior spaces for the 2024 edition, which is now open until May 19. Nature fills us with joy, and this project intends to allow this concept to propagate within urban environments.

It was also established that design should be as invisible as possible and the designer's subjectivity should be pushed aside in order to create graphic work that would shine on its own. Swiss Design eventually became the International Typographic Style as it expanded around the world in the 1950s. If you’re a designer in the 21st century, chances are you’ve studied the International Typographic Style (more commonly known as ‘Swiss Style’). Let’s take a moment to honor some of modern design’s most influential principles, typefaces and artists who started this central-European trend. The brand’s name pays homage to the cult Italian designer Carla Venosta, who created modernist furniture and interiors in the 1970s and ’80s.

It could also be used to represent calendars (days and assignments), articles summaries (titles and descriptions) and much more. The influence of Swiss Design Style can be found right on the Big Human website and the products we’ve incubated in-house (it really is our favorite). We also see it in advertisements, like this 1960s Volkswagen campaign; famous albums, like Joni Mitchell’s “Blue”; and some of our favorite books, like “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. Design Your Way is the place to find the best source of inspiration for your various design projects.

From art to architecture, the Swiss Style permeates almost every aspect of contemporary design. It’s on posters, street signs, our favorite apps and websites, and even some of the buildings we live and work in. The Metropolitan Transit Authority uses a Helvetica typeface and the Swiss Style grid system on all of its signage. It’s evolved by embracing technology, yet grid systems and typographic precision remain at its core. You’ll see its influence in today’s UX/UI, where simplicity and user-friendliness reign supreme. Let’s tip our hats to the masters—Josef Müller-Brockmann and Armin Hofmann.

As pioneers, they set this style’s clean lines and visual communication standards. Their influence extends far beyond Switzerland, echoing through design studios and schools the world over. Designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1954 and ultimately released in 1957, Univers is a sans-serif typeface that served to update the almost 50 year old Akzidenz Grotesk. What made Univers such an important milestone is that it was the first megafamily typeface. Rather than coming in the usual three fonts—regular, italic and bold—it came in no fewer than 21 different weights, each labeled by a different number.

While Keller’s work has a different flavor than what would come later, his preferences for striking graphics, irregular layouts and sans serif typefaces were all clearly influential. A recognizable feature of the Swiss style was the use of simple fonts – that is, sans-serif fonts. Simple fonts were used as a minimalist component and formed an alternative to the old serifs antiqua common in 19th-century printing. Simple fonts made it possible to create a new style that was considered not only practical, but also modern.

They also installed a grass cloth ceiling treatment and sisal rug to add texture. “I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space.

Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. Jerome Thiebault created a polished and petite bathroom complete with storage and a shower. Troweled cement plaster was applied to the walls, and handcrafted Zia tile adds pattern to the floor. Great stay at Schaefer's marina. Stopped at the fuel dock and took on 750 gallons of fuel. Dual pumps made fueling easy and fast. Nice discount for large quantity of fuel. Great line handling from the dock hands. Moved tp the bulkhead for the overnight stay.

Dock guy, Steve, carefully made sure we were tied with long spring lines to handle the tide. This is a great place to stay. Lively and fun but also quiet and calm at night. Restaurant is good and convenient. Currents not a significant issue when taken bow first.

Vegetarian options,

There are no shower facilities and the bathrooms are serviceable. If you have tried the above and still do not see availability, the marina may be full for your dates or unable to accommodate your vessel size. Use our search bar to find nearby marinas or private listings.

Happy hour food,

Marina staff is very knowledgeable on currents and did a great job of securing the boat for an overnight stay. Will be using the Marina on my return trip. After a long run up the Chesapeake with foul current all day, we arrived at sunset. Steve stayed late to handle our lines for us and could not have been more helpful. The long face dock makes for a convenient stop when transiting the canal. Good dinner at the restaurant.

Happy hour drinks,

Steven the Dock Master was amazing. He's very knowledgeable and even washed the water marks and filled our fenders when we got fuel. Passed out leaflets with all kind of info. And cracking jokes the whole time.

Be prepared and time your canal transit and docking based on tides. Check AIS for commercial traffic before departing the dock. Note that the dock has no cleats to which you can tie, you'll need to throw a clove hitch or something around the pilings. The dock hands are quite good about helping with line handling.

Liked it so much we stayed a second night. Quaint town and very nice restaurant. Please note fuel dock is being renovating and will not be available until May. Schaefer's Canal House menu has been digitised by Sirved.

Great location midpoint on the C&D canal. While Schaefer's Canal House is an awesome marina, they also have an amazing bar and restaurant attached to it that second to none. During the season, you will find live music and events at The Lighthouse Bar on site. Additionally, the restaurant has beautiful deck seating that overlooks the water, with both indoor and outdoor dining options available.

LGBTQ+ friendly,

Since the main dockage is along a fixed dock it's fairly easy to pull up and the dockmaster is very helpful and friendly. I ate at the restaurant (nothing else around) the food is good. There aren't any showers, but I didn't find that to be an issue.

Wakes from passing boats were not bad even on a weekend. A little noisier than most places due to the bridge traffic and the restaurant but not bad. Good and pleasant dock help (Olivia).

Nice for a quick stop especially with the shoaling at the entrance to the Anchorage across the canal. Marina Staff are great but tug and barge traffic very challenging. A little crazy on a holiday but the staff is great and works hard. We will definitely add Schaefer's to our 'must return' list. Yes, Schaefer's Canal House has a kids menu, view their kids menu on Sirved.

Schaefer's Canal House Chesapeake City, Maryland Chesapeake Bay Marina

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

The boat traffic both large and small, rocked us all night long. There is no bath house, so that is certainly a “con”. The restaurant was the only real bright spot for this location. We arrived late but they stuck around to help us tie up and made suggestions for the best fendering arrangements. Although we were tied on the river face dock we had no wake issues all night.

Staff wear masks,

Dockmaster and crew were excellent in meeting all our needs. Location much quieter than Chesapeake Inn. Enjoyed the bike trail and restaurant accommodations. Dock hands were very helpful ,especially with their current and friendly. Steve, the Dockmaster, went out of his way to make sure we had a great stay. We will definitely stop here again.

While visiting, boaters will have access to great amenities including restrooms and a full provisioned Ships Store. If a floating dock is preferred, the marina will accommodate. The available amenities of the docks, which are located outside of a restaurant and bar, are noted on the Snag-A-Slip profile.

LGBTQ+ friendly,

Nice location with the restaurant and the dockmaster hours were very convenient for our 5p arrival. Only suggestion is to add showers to the facility. Please provide your ETA, if you will be needing fuel, and direction of approach in the Notes section at checkout. Note that the marina has both fixed and floating docks on site, however the floating docks do not offer shore power. A band was playing, dinner was being served along the docks, and after a quick shower on board, dinner on the dock was fantastic! The band continued after we went back on board, and it added to our cocktails on the flybridge.

Strong currents can be expected. We really enjoyed the bar and restaurant. I would definitely stay there again. Nice people and the dock hands do a great job. I recommend using this marina when passing thru the C & D Canal.

Staff required to disinfect surfaces between visits,

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

The docks and power were very new and more than adequate. Steve and his team provide an excellent experience. The location is great and we got to see the swapping of pilots on a vehicle carrier ship right from our boat. Good spot for waiting on the current and getting a great meal at the restaurant. Dock hands were great and very helpful.

Dinner,

Lots of knocking throughout the night. If you’re looking for a fun spot to grab a bite and drink this is the place. If looking for a quiet night of sleep it’s not the best.

They are able to run this top notch facility because of the knowledgable & friendly deckhands. (Olivia Marro, Leah Stubbs, Scott Seisler) Schaefer's is without question your #1 way point when transiting the C&D Canal. Staff was great - and knowledgeable of local conditions and setting lines for the 3+ foot tide swings. Restaurant next to dock was excellent. Not sure if there was a 'go fast' boat convention in town, but the exhaust noise from noon 'til dark was really ridiculous. The high outside dock in front of the restaurant prohibited us from getting on and off of the boat at low tide.

Dealing with the currents in the canal and the huge concrete Chesapeake City Bridge support in the middle of the dock can be quite a challenge. And many a loud speed boat takes advantage of the good fuel prices here. But the people are friendly and the area peaceful, with the restaurant offering decent food and beverage options. Overall a nice one night stop.

The menu for Schaefer's Canal House may have changed since the last user update. Sirved does not guarantee prices or the availability of menu items. Dock crew were very accommodating.

Also a great walking and bike path if you're looking for a place to stretch your legs. A very convenient stop along the way. The person that helped us dock was excellent! Tied up quickly and securely.

Very helpful tie up assistance. Tom was expert on getting us secured in swift currents. On site restaurant very convenient. Convenient spot to stop with a restaurant at your door.

A 2-3 knot current with an easy approach. Dock hands are very helpful. We overnighted on the face dock which are fixed-3 foot tide. Good basic marina with a really good restaurant. If you are picky the noise from vehicles on the bridge might bother you. I had a cold beer and thought of the sounds as a funky reggae beat.

Schaffer's is a desirable destination, not just a great marina and restaurant. Beautiful view of a competitor across the Canal, too. Free docks on opposite shore were silted in. One is exposed to canal but very little canal traffic. Tied-up just east of bridge but never noticed bridge noise above our heater-fans noise.

Great watching canal traffic. Be aware there are no showers or local stores. Current runs strong up to 2.5 knots.

The production work requires contributions from web design engineers, input from pre-production graphic designers and artists, and computer animation specialists. Computer scientists with IT skills related to console, social media, mobile apps, or cloud-based networks are also needed. Before a game can be licensed and developed, an initial concept must be identified and given shape. For more elaborate video games, this may involve buying up existing intellectual property rights or engaging a creative team in original design work. As a game developer, you would work off of pre-production design templates and use your learned skills in coding, programming, 3D modeling, machine automation, and user-interface functionality to bring the designers’ concepts to life. While some people might leverage a background in graphic design or art to find a way into the field, it helps to also have an understanding of digital execution.

Calculate for all schools

The good news is that the gaming industry is still growing fast and requires very specialized skills. Since game design degrees are somewhat newer, you may want to take extra care in verifying that the school and program you’re considering are regionally accredited. Despite a student’s specific concentration, courses include database organization, object-oriented design, and operating systems. Students in the game design concentration will also take courses in game design, motion design, and game engine programming. Students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Computer Game Design program at George Mason University will focus on computer game design, art and visual technology, computer science, music, and multiple humanities courses.

White House Correspondents’ Dinner 2024 Photos: Best Of The Red Carpet

The problem is down to an issue first identified in 2018 — the helicopter’s spinning rotors and engine exhaust sometimes scorch the grass where it lands. Presenting the fashion equivalent of a united front were Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris, making their red carpet debut as a couple in matching Harbison looks, as well as Scarlett Johansson and her husband Colin Jost, in coordinating Giorgio Armani. Once a popular target of jokes about bad fashion (and not just from the evening’s featured comedian host), the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner has morphed in recent years into a less campy, more staid prelude to the Met Gala, which takes place days later. It’s only fitting, really, given the subtext of journalists being jailed around the world. Browse through beautiful high-resolution Free House pictures.
